Fasting, they say, is a natural and perhaps even necessary part of being human. I have a specific interest in intermittent fasting because of what I have witnessed both in myself and in working with literally thousands of women in the Pf. W community. I looked into both a) the fasting literature that paleo fasting advocates refer to, and b) the literature that exists out in the metabolic and reproductive research archives. Calorie- Restricted (CR) diets, as well as to alternate- day fasting diets, and monitored them over the long term for hormonal responses. To elucidate the physiological basis of sex differences in responses to energy intake, we maintained groups of male and female rats for 6 months on diets with usual, reduced . In response to 4. CR, females became emaciated, ceased cycling, underwent endocrine masculinization, exhibited a heightened stress response, increased their spontaneous activity, improved their learning and memory, and maintained elevated levels of circulating brain- derived neurotrophic factor. Additionally, there was no significant change in the cognitive ability of the males on the 4. CR diet. Males and females exhibited similar responses of circulating lipids (cholesterols/triglycerides) and energy- regulating hormones (insulin, leptin, adiponectin, ghrelin) to energy restriction, with the changes being quantitatively greater in males. The high- fat/high- glucose diet had no significant effects on most variables measured but adversely affected the reproductive cycle in females. Heightened cognition and motor activity, combined with reproductive shutdown, in females may maximize the probability of their survival during periods of energy scarcity and may be an evolutionary basis for the vulnerability of women to anorexia nervosa. They also found this: The weight of the adrenal gland was similar in rats on all diets; however, when normalized to body weight CR and IF diets caused a relative increase in adrenal size, the magnitude of which was greater in females, compared with males. In contrast, both CR diets and the IF diet caused a decrease in the size of the ovaries. And this, bearing in mind that “daytime” for nocturnal rats is “nighttime” for humans: The daytime activity of females was doubled in response to IF, whereas the IF diet did not affect the activity level of males. They found that when alternate- day fasting,female rats and found significant negative hormonal changes occurring in the females. There are even fewer human studies. Human studies on alternate day fasting have not been conducted on women of reproductive age at all, nor have any studies analyzed reproductive responses to fasting. Another important distinction to make is between different body weights. Overweight and obese patients appear to experience significant improvements with IF regimes, but normal weight patients do not show the same across- the- board benefits. For women this may be a particularly sensitive issue. Overweight women may experience metabolic benefits, whereas normal weight women do not. I suspect that that may roughly be the case, but who knows. Honestly, no one at this point. The practical solution, then, I believe, is to look at options, to be honest about priorities, and to listen to one’s body with awareness and love. Is fasting worth trying if a woman is overweight and trying to improve her metabolic markers, and so far hasn’t had much success? But the literature is so sparse in this area that we cannot make any real statements or predictions about the effects of fasting, other than that we just don’t know, and that we should continue to. Paul Jaminet mentions it’s role in boosting the immune system in his book, The Perfect Health Diet, and IF can also be helpful for those trying to lose weight and tune their metabolism. From an evolutionary perspective, intermittent fasting was probably the normal state of affairs. There were no grocery stores, restaurants or convenience stores, and food was not nearly as readily available or easy to come by as it is today. Nor were there watches, schedules, lunch breaks or the kind of structure and routine we have in the modern world. This means it’s likely that our paleo ancestors often did go 1. So, while I agree that IF is part of our heritage, and that it can be helpful in certain situations, I don’t believe it’s an appropriate strategy for everyone. Why? Because fasting can elevate cortisol levels. One of cortisol’s effects is that it raises blood sugar. So, in someone with blood sugar regulation issues, fasting can actually make them worse. I’ve seen this time and time again with my patients. Almost all of my patients have blood sugar imbalances. And it’s usually not as simple as “high blood sugar” or “low blood sugar”. They often have a combination of both (reactive hypoglycemia), or strange blood sugar patterns that, on the surface, don’t make much sense. These folks aren’t eating a Standard American Diet. Most of them are already on a paleo- type or low- carb diet. Yet they still have blood sugar issues. In these cases, cortisol dysregulation is almost always the culprit. When these patients try intermittent fasting, their blood sugar control gets worse. I will see fasting blood sugar readings in the 9. That’s why I don’t recommend intermittent fasting for people with blood sugar regulation problems. Instead, I suggest that they eat every 2- 3 hours. This helps to maintain stable blood sugar throughout the day and prevents cortisol and other stress hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine from getting involved. When my patients that have been fasting and experiencing high blood sugar readings switch to eating this way, their blood sugar numbers almost always normalize. I don’t think eating every 2- 3 hours is “normal” from an evolutionary perspective. But neither is driving in traffic, worrying about your 4. Facebook. Jerry was born on July 1. Robert W. Johnson MD, and Rose Haxall Johnson. He attended Princeton University and Johns Hopkins Medical School before starting a career as an orthopedic surgeon. He married Eleanor Boyd of Philadelphia in 1. Jerry and Ellie were avid birdwatchers and nature lovers and they both were stewards of the land, active in garden and nature groups in Baltimore and Sanibel, FL. Jerry and Ellie, and later Jerry and his second wife, Patricia Coles Dixon, were also enthusiastic travelers. Jerry was preceded in death by his two wives, Ellie and Pat, and at age 9. He is survived by his sister, Posey (Peter) Randall of Philadelphia, three children, Polly (Gary) Bayrd of Minnetonka, MN; Bill (Denise) Johnson of Santa Fe, NM; and Anne Johnson (Stephen Befort) of St. He is also survived by grandchildren, Ellie (Lance) Siler, Garrett (Megan) Bayrd, Anna Befort, Adam Johnson, Claire Johnson, Emma Johnson and Grace Befort. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, a great granddaughter expected in June and two step great granddaughters. A very special thanks go to the staff at Parkwood Shores and the staff of Lifesprk who cared for Jerry during his final year, especially Joyce Hantuba, Aisha Sugule and Deqa Sugule. A small service will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd in Ruxton, MD, this summer. When she wasn’t caring for her boys, she was working third shift at the Winona Hospital where she worked for the last 3. In retirement, she dedicated much of her time to caring for her grandchildren and spent many days under the sun in her garden. She was an avid Twins fan and will now have the best view for baseball season. She will be deeply missed by all her family who she so selflessly cared for and loved throughout the years. INTERCOOLER FLOW BENCHAt Kenne Bell, we don’t just throw an off the shelf intercooler in a manifold and guess at where the air goes. During the design stage, each intercooler is first flow tested in special flow box fixtures to optimize air flow. Length, width, depth, fin and cooling passages are evaluated and optimized for max air flow, as are the discharge manifold ports. To guarantee equal air flow to all cylinders and minimize rich and lean conditions, the intercooler is mounted inside the now flow balanced manifold and tested as a combination. SUPERCHARGER DYNOHowever, since pressurized air flow is affected by both boost and temperature, the entire supercharger assembly is evaluated further on the KB Supercharger Dyno, complete with all components that alter system efficiency (meter, piping, throttle body, inlet manifold, intercooler and discharge manifold). Flow is again measured in each of the 8 ports and collectively with the supercharger(s). This guarantees even air distribution to all cylinders under any boost condition (1. Note the unique air collector plenum boxes under the manifold ports. The dyno datalogs pressure loss, boost, temps, flow and air velocity throughout the entire flow path to the engine along with supercharger discharge temp, rpm and power consumption (engine HP required to drive supercharger). CHASSIS DYNOWe use an ultra hi- tech above ground Dynojet “rack dyno” with dual hi speed fans (one for the intercooler and the other for the radiator). To guarantee accuracy without temperature correction factors, the entre dyno room is climate controlled. A huge air conditioner and evacuation system maintains the same test temps regardless of ambient temperature. MAMMOTH INLET SYSTEMSAIR FLOWAnyone knowledgeable in high performance knows that . Stock type air filter boxes are designed for lower HP and are restrictive on superchargered high HP engines. The higher the HP te greater the restriction/HP loss. MUSTANG 2. 01. 1 UP 5. BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTERIf it weren’t - smaller would be better. Just look at the tests and the records. As with our Superchargers, the Kenne Bell “Bigger is Better” philosophy applies to our Mammoth. Fact: ANY restriction whatsoever in the inlet system (CAK, throttle body or manifold) will result in a corresponding boost pressure/HP loss. And the HP losses increase incrementally with your engines HP/air flow (2. HP from 8- 1. 5 psi). Check out the size and cfm of Kenne Bell Mammoth manifolds and throttle bodies as compared to front inlet systems. Nothing is more crucial to supercharger efficiency than the inlet system (filter, pipe, meter and throttle body). Starve the supercharger and it develops less boost, heats the air charge and consumes more engine HP to drive. To guarantee our kits produce more HP, we offer only proven superior rear inlet kits - the standard industry leading 4. Mammoth. These big inlet systems coupled to the largest and/or most efficient 2. L, 3. L and 4. L superchargers is why Kenne Bell is so dominant in Ford supercharging. The higher the engine HP level the greater the HP gains. Using the little stock 8. SHelby dual 6. 0mm will drop yet another 1. HP. A smaller filter, meter, inlet pipe and manifold will further restrict air flow to the throttle body. Bigger is better. MM . Both will run low 1.
